Background about Khat or Charpai
Charpoys( Wooden Telephone Seat) are rustic yet traditional pieces of furniture that have been used in India for centuries. Indian charpai furniture is still widely found in villages. These simple beds are made with four short legs and a coir rope woven around a wooden frame that supports the structure.
For generations, the charpai was a common piece of furniture in almost every village across India. However, with changing lifestyles and modern furniture replacing traditional designs, this heritage craft is slowly disappearing.
Inspiration
In a small village of Barmer, Rajasthan, we came across a beautiful tradition — the craft of handmade wooden charpai. Almost every family in the village was part of this heritage. The men carefully carved the wooden parts, while the women skillfully wove the charpai by hand. It was not just furniture; it was a way of life passed down through generations.
During conversations with the artisans, we learned something heartbreaking. Only a few families continue this craft today. As lifestyles change, people no longer prefer bulky traditional charpais, and many artisans are leaving the craft to find other work. Slowly, this beautiful art is fading away.
This realization stayed with us. We kept thinking — what if we could adapt tradition for modern living instead of letting it disappear?
That thought led to the design of this Wooden Telephone Seat, also known as a Gossip Seat — a compact piece inspired by the traditional charpai weaving technique. The idea was simple: keep the craft alive while making it relevant for modern homes.
This Wooden Telephone Seat holds a phone, a notebook, and offers a comfortable place to sit and pause — much like the old days when people would sit, talk, and share stories.
For us, this design is more than just furniture.
It is a small step towards keeping our traditional crafts alive in a modern world.
